WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Hawkeye Episode 5, “Ronin,” which aired Wednesday on Disney+.
When Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) debuted in Disney+’s Hawkeye, it didn’t bode well for Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), teasing a dark future for the new Black Widow. She was intent on killing him to truly stamp her signature on Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the latest episode of the archer’s New York adventure offering more insight into Yelena’s current mission. Interestingly, as fans witnessed her surprisingly cheerful disposition, one key meeting confirmed she carried over one filthy Red Guardian trait.
This is none other than bad dinner etiquette, which mixes sloppy eating, bad timing and uncomfortable, insensitive conversations — which she clearly picked up from her “father” Alexei Shostakov in Black Widow. There, after Natasha and Yelena rescued Alexei from a Soviet jail, they took him back to their “mother” Melina’s home for a family reunion.
It led to a family dinner that got awkward fast, with Red Guardian eating in an unkempt manner, disturbing Nat as she tried to formulate a plan against the Red Room and creeping his daughters out by talking dirty to Melina at the table, as he hadn’t been with a woman for years. It was one of the movie’s funniest scenes, proving how much of an uncaring, selfish slob he could be.
While Yelena toned it down in Hawkeye, she was still just as obnoxious, exuding the same lackadaisical essence of Red Guardian when she officially met Kate Bishop. As Kate entered her apartment, she found Yelena there, who decided to make box mac and cheese when she broke in. A scared Kate sat down and a really unsettling discussion ensued, with Yelena gobbling down the meal, putting copious amounts of hot sauce in it and weirding Kate out.
As they talked, Yelena admitted she didn’t want to kill the young archer; she just wanted to see the Big Apple sites such as the new and improved Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center and the New York Christmas tree. However, as she slurped down her meal like a kid, it felt like Alexei all over again, grossing Kate out, as she didn’t see this as a yummy dinner, or her home as the right setting to hold business meetings. While Yelena didn’t bring up sex, she did freak Kate out and get her stomach churning by talking about eating reindeer, which isn’t the best thing to talk about for the yuletide season.
Ultimately, Yelena did address the theme of family in Hawkeye, like what Alexei did in Black Widow when he said he was glad to have his girls back together. But in the new Widow’s case, it’s about revenge rather than reunion, promising Kate she’d kill Clint since she held him responsible for Nat’s death. So like her dad, Yelena really knew how to kick the flair up over a meal, bringing his dirty habit back to America but with a lot more vengeance baked in.
