Actor Simu Liu is a superhero icon after appearing in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, its first film focused on an Asian superhero. Liu recently talked about his new role and how a brief stint as Spider-Man helped him get it.
During his opening monologue for Saturday Night Live, Liu recalled essentially asking Marvel Studios for the role as early as 2014. He then discussed where he was ten years ago– dressing up as Spider-Man for children’s birthday parties. It was that experience that pushed him to aim higher. To the child that kicked his shin and kept telling him that he wasn’t Spider-Man, Liu had a special message: “You’re right, I’m not Spider-Man… I’m Shang-Chi, bitch!”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the first film released by Marvel Studios in some time to premiere exclusively in theaters. Its predecessors, such as Black Widow, saw a hybrid release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. Shang-Chi earned approximately $100 million in its first ten days and quickly became the highest grossing film in the United States in the pandemic era, breaking numerous box office records.
Despite its undeniable success, Simu Liu has continued to promote the film, using everything from Old Spice references to the numerous theories surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home to promote the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on Disney+.
There has been little news regarding a sequel to Shang-Chi or when audiences will next see the newest Avenger. However, there have been rumors suggesting that a spinoff series is in the works. The show will reportedly focus on Shang-Chi’s sister and current leader of the Ten Rings organization, Xialing, with Meng’er Zhang set to return. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton previously discussed Xialing’s future. Referring to Shang-Chi, Cretton stated, “There is a line in the middle of the movie where she tells Katy that if her dad won’t let her into his empire, she’s going to build her own. So, to see her sit on that throne and redefine it in a way that is uniquely hers is very exciting.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has not been without its controversies, though many stem from Chinese audiences and criticism from Chinese state-run media, perpetuating the film’s connection to Fu Manchu through its comic book source material, as well as apparent criticisms regarding Liu’s appearance and statements made in previous interviews. To date, the film has not been released in Chinese theaters.
